The mesolimbic system and relating reward/(emotional) reinforcement pathways in the nervous system.
Dopaminergic response to exogenous psychotropic chemicals. Dopamine plays a key role in reinforcement and reward, and is postulated to be the key factor mediating the responses in certain mental illnesses such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, ADHD, dementia/Parkinsonism, amongst many others.
Regular “pleasurable” activities increase dopaminergic levels in the mesolimbic system, thereby inducing reinforcement and reward of the pleasurable stimuli so that we, as humans, will desire to continue that action in the future.
